The Pharmacy Technician inputs medication orders electronically, fills, packages and delivers medication orders, and inventories and records pharmaceuticals to be dispensed to residents or other associated clients. Work is performed in accordance with Federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern long-term care facilities, and under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist.
Duties:
- Inputs medication orders and ancillary orders via Personal Computer or other electronic device into the automated patient care record system.
- Fills and packages medication orders under the supervision and direction of a Registered Pharmacist.
- Delivers medication orders to respective units, as directed.
- Conducts or assists in conducting an inventory of all pharmaceuticals, to include ensuring that none are outdated and that an adequate supply is available to meet the System’s needs.
- Contacts nursing units within the Center to clarify medication orders under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist.
- Assures that all medication orders are submitted to third party payors according to established guidelines, with notification to the Pharmacist of any discrepancies or payment problems.
- Utilizes Personal Computers, fax, and telephone equipment to obtain and/or provide information, and compile data for narrative and statistical reports and surveys.
- Packs medications for delivery to all Centers.
- Answers questions and inquiries from direct care staff on status of medication orders.
- Conducts the cassette exchanges of routine medications for each resident at each Center, checks refrigerators, medication carts and medication rooms for expired medications and cleanliness, and checks emergency boxes for proper replacement of medications and the floor stock for expired medications and proper labeling.
- Accounts for the return and proper destruction of discontinued or out of date medications.
- Employs necessary safeguards and diligence in dispensing or disposing of controlled medications.
- Copies and files packing slips and related information as part of the Pharmacy’s record keeping system.
- Accounts for the receipt of all medication shipments and the billing for medical equipment, such as IV pumps, from suppliers.
- Prepares invoices for the Pharmacist’s review and approval.
- Performs related tasks and duties as assigned or directed by a pharmacist.
Experience/Requirements:
- High School or GED equivalent.
- 1+ year of Pharmacy Technician experience.
- Adequate computer skills.
- Superior communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
